Marriage Opponents File Request for a Discriminatory D.C. Ballot Initiative

Opponents sought today to head off Washington's progress toward civil marriage equality by filing a request for a ballot initiative that would state that "only marriage between a man and a woman is valid and recognized in the District of Columbia." The request was filed by a small group led by Bishop Harry Jackson of Beltsville, MD, who openly embraced his outsider status this week by calling on non-District citizens to urge Congressional intervention against any lawfully passed legislation on marriage equality from the city's duly elected Council members.

We must show that we will not be intimidated by this Prop-8-style campaign led by outsiders seeking to divide our community and strip us of our rights. Sign our pledge to support marriage equality. Become a fan of DC for Marriage on Facebook to keep up with our news and events. Contact us to learn about volunteering opportunities or make a donation. Tell your friends and family about DC for Marriage and our common cause. Together, we can stand against these attacks and secure marriage rights for straight and gay citizens in the District of Columbia.
